Poem: A Tribute to Our Priests

St. Thomas More, pray for all our priests!

I have been, for days now, engaged in contemplation and process of discernment of bringing this blog to a close. The more I find myself, however, of facing a greater possibility of writing a farewell message to those who come for a visit, a peek, or to read an article, I notice a distinct change on its sidebar. Today is more difficult than yesterday. For as I check an initial post done at the time of conception of this blog, which is over four years ago, I am caught off guard to find a poem I vaguely remember writing. Perhaps, though busier my life has become, I just need to recognize more fully or embrace with greater appreciation surprises that have a divine element to them. I am thankful for those! So, yes, it's not time to say goodbye.

Always for Others
By Easter Almuena

You are the image and likeness of God
But with you the morning awakens
With the call to rise
Not for you
But always for others.

God handpicked you from a myriad of souls
Molded you since you were a babe
To prepare you for a journey
Not for you
But always for others.

God blessed you with wisdom
To use to give form to his plans
And love to carry them out
Not for you
But always for others.

Mary walks with you
Guiding and loving you
For to her you are a Christ
Not for you
But always for others.

You hold the Body of Christ
Embrace his name and proclaim it
And a father and counselor you have become
Not for you
But always for others.

God forever bless you
Walk and carry you when your feet are weary
Bring peace and joy to your heart
For though your life is never for you
It is Christ’s and he delights in you.

Dear Easter

I came across your poem recently and thought it was written specially for our beloved former parish priest, who founded our parish 44 years ago. He served us with selfless dedication all these years and has only recently moved into a retirement home. We celebrated his 90th birthday last month and I am making a photo DVD of the celebrations for him to keep as a remembrance of this occasion.I would like to include your beautiful poem as a tribute to him and request your permission to do so.

Thank you for sharing this poem which expresses so movingly the way some priests give their lives in the service of God and his people. God bless you.

Hello Marguerite,

Thank you for your kind words! They inspire me to write when days are long and I'd rather be resting. I really appreciate it.

Yes, you may. What a pleasure to dedicate a poem to a priest whose life was lovingly and tirelessly dedicated to God's Church and its people! God be praised for him!

Thank you for caring enough to give him tribute.

Dear Easter

Thank you for giving me the permission I requested. I am really glad to have found the author of the poem that moved me so much, and also your blog where I discovered others who feel the same way about your poem. As Alexander Pope said in his "Essay on Criticism":

True wit is nature to advantage dress'd,
What oft was thought, but ne'er so well express'd,
Something, whose truth convinc'd at sight we find,
That gives us back the image of our mind.

Your poem certainly "gives us back the image of our mind" by putting into words what we think of priests who clearly are called by God to serve. I am fortunate to have known a number of them in my life, one of whom was a French missionary priest who baptised me and my husband when we were adults. These true shepherds are deserving of every honour we can give them in this life.

I hope you don't mind my saying that I think your name quite unusual, but full of meaning. I have come across Pascal as a boys' name before, and of course the feminine form Pasqualina, which also mean Easter. Your name is like a badge that proudly proclaims your Christian faith, and it is no surprise that you have such a name.

Blessings to you!

Dear Marguerite,

Your words to me are a gift of love and faith. I read them twice and then three to relish in its beauty---truly, a gift of one to another within God's precious love. Thank you for sharing the poem! I looked for the poem I wrote a few years ago and found it. I wrote it for a blind person whose heart is so precious, one she gives with such delicate touch through words. Words are powerful; they either move us to do good or destroy us. Yours have the life of Christ that make me want to do more, reach out to others more. Thank you. Again, thank you for giving tribute to priests who deserve them. We pray for priests who need special prayers. Our words and prayers will touch their hearts and move them to be "Christ" who lives in them. God be praised for all of them! Thank you. I'm blessed to have met you in cyberspace!

Blessings always and deepest thanks,
Easter

For Grace, on Easter

A bundle of time in a handmade vessel
Where ageless familiarities of new and old
Is also where you abide in their most secret
of secrets, making its rest your sanctuary

Pure as white in the attire of kinship
Making known to us the mystery of your
Message that, as eternal is your love has
Always been, we are forever yours alone

Who would have known the beauty of these
Meetings, where souls meet souls, and where
In prayer we become as one in your care, in
Your being, in the surest, most abiding way?

Where heaven awaits us is where we long
To be, to be finally as one with you, where
The glorious moment of Easter is no longer
Just a dream, but a final fulfillment of grace

Dear Easter

I am pleased to be able to show you how I have included your poem in a tribute to our former parish priest, Father Eric Burton, who celebrated his 90th birthday last October. It's been more than a month since I uploaded to youtube the video that I made for him, in order to share it with the rest of the parish. If you'd like to have a look at this video, you can find it using this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2KqNLPTQTI
or by typing in the words: Father Burton 90th birthday. It was previously unlisted but I have just today made it public.I hope you like it.

I thank you once again for permission to use your poem and I have included an acknowledgement at the end of the credits. The Ave Maria that accompanies your poem and the dedication to Father Burton is performed by my granddaughters.

Dearest Marguerite,

In silence, as my husband is busily finishing up work, I lay in bed watching your YouTube video presentation. The many images and music brought tears to my eyes. You did a fantastic job of putting it together to honor a priest not just for the gift of life, but also for the many long years of priestly service he rendered to God's people. I truly am in awe. In my own little corner of the world, I give thanks to God for having used my tiny fingers in putting words together through which God himself expresses his great love for his priests! God be praised as we all work together in recognizing the loving service our priests provide for us! Your granddaughter, by the way, are indeed gifted with voice and music! Thank you for sharing all these with me! My spirit is renewed; I am ready for this week's tasks God has laid out for me. I am grateful to you.

Praising God with you,
Easter

Dear Easter, last sunday (17 Jan 2015) I was asked to be the emcee at a dinner for our parish priest (he is our Archbishop in our diocese) and his assistant priest sacerdotal anniversary. One of the item in the program as to give toast to them. I wanted something different and I thought of reciting a poem. As I searched the internet to look for a poem suitable to read, I came across your blog and the first thing that I saw was this poem that you wrote. I was very touched when I read the poem and there n then I decided to use your poem to recite on that dinner night. A few friends approached me after the dinner and said it was a beautiful poem and some even asked me to give a copy to them.
Easter, I am glad you did not close your blog. When my friends asked me who was the composer of the poem, I said "she is a catholic blogger who wanted to close her blog but after re-reading this poem which she wrote years ago, she decided not to close her blog" God bless you Easter.

Marguerite said...

Dearest Easter

Your kind words touched me deeply and made me feel that you are truly a kindred spirit. My compilation of the video was a labour of love, as were all the efforts of many other parishioners to make Father Burton's birthday celebration a memorable occasion for him. It was also a farewell to him. I took many of the photos of the church compound and the interior so that dear Father Burton can look at them when he misses the parish that he founded. He painstakingly selected every feature, every statue for the new church that was built in 1995. After completing the video in December, I noticed after mass one morning that the roses in the portico were in bloom and I could not resist photographing them and adding the photos to the video, even though it meant some re-editing.
The hymns on the soundtrack are some of my favourite pieces of sacred music and I was fortunate that my son, Dominic, had recorded the Laudate Dominum and the Panis Angelicus when our choir sang them under his direction a few years ago. I never get tired of listening to them and I'm so pleased to learn that they moved you too. Your poem needed a beautiful piece of music to accompany it - Schubert's Ave Maria was just right.
Father Burton is a very humble and self-effacing man, but I think at the ripe old age of ninety he deserves to know how we love and appreciate him.
You are very gracious, Easter, but it is I who am grateful to you for your poem that was so appropriate for this occasion.I thank you also for your lovely comment on YouTube.
God bless you, dear sister in Christ.
Marguerite

Easter Almuena said...

Dearest Marguerite,

Your son Dominic did a great job! I am familiar with the music pieces he chose because my family sings with the choir at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (http://cathedralofourladyofpeace.com/), where my husband serves as a deacon. Thinking of all you shared and the many gifts God generously gives us, I can only praise him for how he moves through his Holy Spirit. Fr. Bill founded a church! That inspires me to be open to God's ways of calling us to move with God's creative plans for his people. (Your tribute to Fr. Burton is an example!) I work for a retreat center and created a retreat for couples in 1-5 years of marriage. It will be held on the 13th of February. Please say a prayer for it and our young married couples. This is the stage in life that is most challenging for them as they busy themselves with raising a family. Your prayer would mean a lot to me, even as we are over 5,000 miles apart. God continue to bless your precious family, your church and your community, dear Marguerite! Who knows, maybe one day I shall come to physically join you in a Eucharistic celebration! You, your family, and friends are welcome to celebrate with us in ours!

God be praised,
Easter

Dear Vianeev!

Thank you for leaving me your story and how the poem was used to give tribute to your priest! I get so many messages from all over the world either through this blog or via e-mail. I am grateful for your story and the others' because they move me to listen to God's voice and to do as he tells me. I am happy that the poem is shared with others who also wish to give tribute to priests. Thank you for letting your friends know and for thanking me for not closing this blog--the latter means a lot to me, too! Please pray for my son TJ, who is only 14, yet desiring to enter the seminary. Who knows, maybe one day, this poem is for him too!

I love your name; it's so unique.

Dear Friends in Christ,

I give permission to anyone interested in using this poem to give to a priest or priests and permission to print it in your newsletter or parish bulletin: so long as Title, Author, and Content are copied as is, meaning, NOT REWORDED and not claimed or owned by yourself or anyone else. Thank you.

I'm sorry to say that I have seen it on one website with a few changes. Please do not do that. Changing some of the words loses the flavor, tone, and flow of the poem. When you say "God blesses you" instead of the original words "God bless you," you lose the momentum and the full gift to be a blessing to your priest. God always blesses his priests at every Eucharistic celebration -- no doubt. So, instead, be a part of the giving of gift for God to bless him -- through you. God hears your prayers. Thank you.

God bless you abundantly! Thank you for your support of our priests!

Your poem is a treasure Esther and I've come to find it at the right time.
A Priest of ours has died very young and his funeral was today. Would it be ok to use your poem in remembrance of him, whilst giving thanks to our Priests?

If you're happy with this, just illustrate how I can post it online to meet your guidelines.

Thank you,

God Bless -x-

Dear Easter,
Our Parish priest is celebrating his 50th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination, today, May 25, 2018. He has been our Parish priest for 24 years and before that taught at a local Catholic High School for 25 years. Your poem touched my heart and truly reflects his priestly ministry - always serving and ministering in his generous, kind, compassionate way. May I share you poem with him in honor of his Anniversary and service to God and His Church? Thank You for this awesome tribute to our priests.

I happen to come across your poem and it touched me... would you be so kind as to allow me to use this as part of my opening prayer, and to print it and put it into his card?

Thank you for your gift & especially thankful for your ministry, Easter!

We have decided to present a poem and as I read your poem I felt amused of how we can relay this to our priests. Can we use your poem and translate it into our own dialect Bisaya?
