Poem: A Tribute to Our Priests

St. Thomas More, pray for all our priests!

I have been, for days now, engaged in contemplation and process of discernment of bringing this blog to a close. The more I find myself, however, of facing a greater possibility of writing a farewell message to those who come for a visit, a peek, or to read an article, I notice a distinct change on its sidebar. Today is more difficult than yesterday. For as I check an initial post done at the time of conception of this blog, which is over four years ago, I am caught off guard to find a poem I vaguely remember writing. Perhaps, though busier my life has become, I just need to recognize more fully or embrace with greater appreciation surprises that have a divine element to them. I am thankful for those! So, yes, it's not time to say goodbye.

Always for Others
By Easter Almuena

You are the image and likeness of God
But with you the morning awakens
With the call to rise
Not for you
But always for others.

God handpicked you from a myriad of souls
Molded you since you were a babe
To prepare you for a journey
Not for you
But always for others.

God blessed you with wisdom
To use to give form to his plans
And love to carry them out
Not for you
But always for others.

Mary walks with you
Guiding and loving you
For to her you are a Christ
Not for you
But always for others.

You hold the Body of Christ
Embrace his name and proclaim it
And a father and counselor you have become
Not for you
But always for others.

God forever bless you
Walk and carry you when your feet are weary
Bring peace and joy to your heart
For though your life is never for you
It is Christ’s and he delights in you.

I'm sorry to say that I have seen it on one website with a few changes. Please do not do that. Changing some of the words loses the flavor, tone, and flow of the poem. When you say "God blesses you" instead of the original words "God bless you," you lose the momentum and the full gift to be a blessing to your priest. Dear Easter,

Thank you for your generosity in sharing this beautiful poem that you wrote. I would love to read it this weekend for our pastor who is going to another parish. Can you please give me the pronunciation for your last name? I would like to say it correctly and not mess it up!

God Bless,

Dear Susan,

Almuena (e is pronounced as long a).

I wouldn't worry about it. What is important is that the poem is read as a prayer with a loving and grateful heart for our priests. God be praised! May our Lord bless you and your family abundantly!

Susan, know that I am touched by your concern for me... God richly bless you for your sweet and loving spirit!

Blessings to you today and always!

Easter Almuena said...

Dear Susan,

You are welcome and thanks again! The Lord hugged me through you.

The poem is old, but somehow your words brought back good memories of how the Lord woke me up so early in the morning to write that poem for his beloved priests. I am so happy to know that your priest is truly a good priest. Our encouragement for them, I believe, gives them hope for the task of embodying the risen Christ.

A friend of mine (Esther Gefroh) and I started in 2008 Spiritual Moms Apostolate in our diocese (Diocese of Honolulu). We match prayerful women with our priests, who become spiritual mothers to them, and who pray for their respective spiritual sons on a daily basis.

It is an honor to share with you also two of several poems of mine that were published by the Hawaii Catholic Herald. If you google my name I think maybe the link will pop up.

Praising God with you!

Dear Easter,
What a truly moving poem! I will be sharing it with a Jesuit priest who will be celebrating his 65th ordination anniversary in a few days. He has been a dear friend for over 40 years and each year on his special day, I offer him a few words of gratitude and respect. This year I will do the same but I am certain that he will be especially pleased to read your poem of tribute. Thank you for sharing it with your readers.

Dear Easter - Thank you for your ministry (ands also your husbands). This poem was ideal for our associate pastor's 50th anniversary of ordination. I used it this weekend at the end of mass and now we have parishnoners asking where it came from. Could we have permission to post it on our website with your name as author and the copyrite date? If that doesn't work we'll use a link to this website.

Peace and Blessings,

Dear Deacon Mike Rooney,

God's abundance of blessings be yours and to your ministry, and to all who come here!

I have given permission use of this poem to all who wish to give tribute to a priest(s). I'm delighted to know that you read it to your associate pastor for his 50th anniversary ordination. It brings me joy because somehow I'm part of the celebration. The poem has been printed in many church bulletins. Though permission of use of this poem has been granted and posted by me, it certainly is wonderful to hear comments from people from all over the world. We certainly are a universal church!

Yes, print it in your church bulletin if you wish, reproduce the poem for others to use for their priest friends, copy and paste the poem, or send the link to parishioners and or friends. If poem and or link is sent via e-mail, please include at the bottom of the poem the following message:

Dear Friends in Christ,

I grant permission use of this poem for the purpose of giving tribute to priests. You may print it in your newsletter or parish bulletin, read or send it to your priest(s): so long as Title, Author, and full Content are copied and NOT REWORDED. Thank you.

God bless you abundantly! Thank you for your support of our priests!

Dear Friends in Christ,

I give permission to anyone interested in using this poem to give to a priest or priests and permission to print it in your newsletter or parish bulletin: so long as Title, Author, and Content are copied as is, meaning, NOT REWORDED and not claimed or owned by yourself or anyone else. Thank you.

God always blesses his priests at every Eucharistic celebration -- no doubt. So, instead, be a part of the giving of gift for God to bless him -- through you. God hears your prayers. Thank you.

God bless you abundantly! Thank you for your support of our priests!
